Social Life

Getting Involved
It doesn’t matter what you are in to, just somehow get involved. Join a club, fraternity, sorority, community service organization, intramural sports, really anything. On a lot of campuses there is a club for everything, and if they do not have the club you are looking for, then create your own. Guarantee you that there is someone else out there that is in into the same things as you.

Reasons for Getting Involved
1. Students who get involved are more likely to be satisfied with their college experience and persist to graduation.
2. Getting involved makes large schools seem much smaller and more manageable.
3. It is a great way to make friends and connections. Not to mention, it gives you something fun to do.
4. Students who get involved learn important life skills and grow in ways that they weren't expecting.
5. It gives you something to set you apart from the other college graduates. Employers want to see that you did more than just pass a class.

Making Friends

Sometimes trying to make new friends can be awkward, but its one of those times that you really just have to put yourself out there.  One of the best places to meet people is in your dorm, so try and keep your door open for people walking by. Guarantee you that there are other people in your hall that are looking to meet people just like you. If you do not meet people right away that you feel you really connected to, don’t give up. Go to clubs or events on campus. Here is a list of places to meet people:
1.     Join a club.
2.     Join an intramural sports team.
3.     Volunteer on -- or off -- campus.
4.     Attend a religious service on campus.
5.     Get a job on campus.
6.     Get involved with a leadership opportunity.
7.     Start a study group.
8.     Work for the campus newspaper.
9.     Work for the campus yearbook.
10.  Start your own club or organization!

Going Greek
Typically Greek life is made up of fraternities and sororities, which are organizations of students that share a common goal or goals and tend to socialize together. They are very active in their community and school. If you are interested in joining Greek Life find out what Greek letter organizations exist on your campus by looking on your school’s website or going to the student affairs office.
Typically the processes of joining a fraternity is called rush, and joining a sorority is called sorority recruitment. Males can choose what fraternities they would like to join, and only attend those rush meetings. At most college campuses, women going through sorority recruitment are split up into groups and they must meet with all the sororities on campus, before choosing one. If the organization and the student both choose each other, bids are handed out to the students on "bid day". Fraternities usually hand out bids when they choose unless the Greek system requires a more specific time. Sororities sometimes meet together in a large gym or hall and the female student is called out in the middle of the room to find out what sorority they are receiving a bid from.
